Step-by-Step Guide: Checking Your IP

How do I figure out what my IP address is?

The easiest and most reliable way to do this is the following:

  • At the START menu, click "Run".

  • You will be prompted with a dialog box.

  • At the "C:\blah blah blah>" prompt, type "ipconfig" (without the quotes).

  • Notice the "IP address" field. This should start out 192.168.0.xxx (or something similar). This is the IP address that you will forward your ports to (when you open UDP 6112).

What's the difference between a "Static" and a "Dynamic" IP address?

If you play Rise of Legends on a computer that has a Static IP address then the IP address will NOT change when you reboot your computer, add a new computer to your network, or remove another computer from your network. This means that when you set up your Router to port forward to your computer's IP address, it will always work (unless you manually change your computer's IP address). If you manually change the IP address then you will need to update your Router's port forwarding scheme to the new IP address.

Many Routers assign Dynamic IP addressed to computers by default. This means that sometimes your computer could be at one IP address, but sometimes it could be at another. If your IP address changes then you need to make sure that you update your Router's port forwarding scheme to point to the new IP address. Sound like a hassle? Well, it can be. That's one of the advantages of using a Static IP address for your gaming computer if you can. Basically you need to re-verify your IP address everytime you boot up your computer (and sometimes even more often than that) and if this has changed then you need to update your port forwarding scheme.

How do I know whether I have a Static or Dynamic IP address? How do I make a Static IP address?

Odds are if you didn't specifically set up a Static IP address, your Router assigns the computers on your network Dynamic IP addresses. The most accurate way to tell, though, is to examine your network connections and see whether your computer is "Obtains an IP address automatically" or whether you "Use the following address".

If you are interested in setting up a Static IP for the computer you play Rise of Legends on, then you may find the following Portforward.com link helpful:
