Step-by-Step Guide: Firewalls

While most folks can connect to most other folks without adjusting their Router and Firewall settings, the only way to guarantee connectivity with other players is to make sure that you allow certain kinds of network traffic to and from your computer.

Not sure what Routers, Firewalls, or NATs are? Try some of the following links for some background.

The first thing to do is determine which (if any) of the above situations apply to you. The next section deals with Software Firewalls. You can also check out our Routers & NATs page.

Do I have a Software Firewall?

Most people should have some sort of Software Firewall running on their computers. If you do, then you need to setup your Software Firewall to:

  • Allow 6112 UDP traffic, both Incoming and Outgoing for Rise of Legends.
Here are some popular Software Firewall programs that you may have installed on your computer:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall
McAfee V6.0 Firewall Plus
Zone Alarm Pro
BlackICE
Norton Personal Firewall 2004
Norton Internet Security 2005
Sygate Personal Firewall Pro
F-Secure
Microsoft ISA Server
Cisco PIX
Checkpoint

Each of these Software Firewall programs will allow you to configure your ports. Ideally you will be able to configure your Software Firewall so that it permits both INCOMING and OUTGOING 6112 UDP traffic.

One useful starting point is: http://firewalling.com/routers.htm

This website has instructions (with screenshots) on how to set up ports using several popular Software Firewall programs.

Next, let's figure out if you have a Router.
