Error Message Guide
So, you've received an error message while trying to login, join, or create a game. Here is some more information about each specific error you might have received:
Message #1: "Your current firewall/NAT/router settings do not permit you to join or create games."
You may have received this when you initially logged in, or subsequently when you tried to join or create a game. What this message means is that your configuration of firewall/NAT/router does not permit the necessary network traffic for you to join or create games.
Trouble Shooting Steps:
- Try logging out of Multiplayer and returning to the Main Menu for a few minutes before logging in again. Why?
- If your setup was working before, but no longer seems to work, make sure that nothing about your setup has changed recently that will require you to reconfigure your settings. Some examples of changes that may require you to recheck your settings:
- New hardware (e.g., new router, playing on a different machine).
- Patches/firmware updates (e.g., Windows XP patches, firewall patches, router firmware upgrades).
- Change in the local IP address of your gaming machine (e.g., if you have a network at home sometimes the IP addresses of your machines can change without you realizing it. This may result in having your ports forwarded to the wrong machine).
- Make sure that you've configured your firewall/NAT/router to allow both incoming and outgoing UDP traffic on port 6112 and outgoing UDP traffic on port 27901. Quickstart & Step-by-step Instructions are available.
Message #2: "You were unable to join the game session because none of the players were able to connect to you."
This means that the connection packets are not reaching your gaming machine. Most likely it's due to some sort of NAT incompatibility between your firewall/router and the firewalls/routers of other people already in the session.
- If you have a router, make sure you have your port forwarding set up.
- It's possible to get this error in rare instances even if your router is set up for port forwarding (or if you do not have a router at all). This is because sometimes the connection packet may fail to reach you because of a temporary loss of connection. You can try to rejoin the game and see if this works.
Message #3: "You were unable to join the game because you can only connect to X of Y players."
Message #4: "You were unable to join the game because there was no response from the host."
This may mean that the game has already launched (or been canceled) and that you will simply have to find another game to join or create one on your own.
If this is not the case, then it may mean that your connection packets cannot reach the host. Most likely this is because you failed to negotiate with the host's NAT and/or he doesn't have his ports forwarded.
Message #5: "You were unable to join the game because your attempt timed out."
This may mean that the game has already launched and that you will simply have to find another game to join or create one on your own.
In this case, everyone was able to connect with you (there were no connection errors) but the game either launched without you or was canceled before you joined.
