Get Out And Run!
October 08th, 2007
Do
the Hustle … The Halloween Hustle, that is!
The 2nd Annual Halloween Hustle 5K Run/Walk will be
held on Saturday, October 20th so please
join the MOMS Club for a morning of races and fun! The
event benefits the construction of, Our Children's Playground,
in North Baltimore County, to be built in memory of
children who lost their lives at an early age. This
cause is close to home for the MOMS Club because one
of our members lost a son in a tragic baseball accident
on Father’s Day 2005.
The Halloween Hustle 2007 will kickoff at historic
St. James Episcopal Church and Academy in Monkton, Maryland
on Saturday, October 20, 2007. Registration begins at
7:30 a.m. The 5K Run Walk and the Family Fun Walk will
begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Trick or Treat Trot
kids races at 10:30 a.m.
There will be a special performance by Lisa and Mikel
of Milkshake beginning at 9:45 a.m.
The 5K course is a loop around the historic St. James
campus on Monkton, Old York and Markoe Roads. The Trick
or Treat Trot kids races, costumed fun runs for children
age 10 and under, will be held on the St. James campus.
There will be multiple kids' races ranked by ages and
number of participants. And new this year, the Family
Fun Walk will be a 2-mile walk out and back course along
the 5K course.
Also new this year is a special Chick-Fil-A Party for
the top fundraising team! So form a team and ask others
to sponsor your participation. The team registration
instructions are attached to this email as well. Be
sure to check with your employer about matching gift
programs that could double your fundraising efforts
CAN'T COME? DONATE!
If you would like to make a donation to "Our Children's
Playground", please make a check payable to MOMS
Club and send it to PO Box 508, Phoenix, MD 21131-0508.
All donations go directly to the playground fund.

BHG At Baltimore Marathon!
Come
out and cheer on Team Big Huge Games which will make
its debut in this year’s Baltimore Marathon Team
Relay event, Saturday, October 13, 2007
(this is one day before the Race for the Cure), beginning
at 8AM. For those not familiar with a relay event for
a marathon, each team runs the same course as the full
marathon runners do, except the course is divided into
4 “legs”. Your representatives for BHG are:
John “Hawk” Hawkins: In
his marathon debut, will be running Legs 1 AND 2, miles
1-13 (b/c his coach whose initials are “MZ”
is making him do this claiming, “It will be good
for you”). If you come to see him during Leg 2,
he will be doing his impersonation of our own Dan Halka.
John/Dan can be seen running through Druid Hill Park
Drive, Charles Village, Mt.Vernon, Inner Harbor, Key
Highway, and Fort McHenry.
Monica “It’s *only* 6 Miles”
Zamora: The “Hills Specialist”,
will tackle the most difficult part of the course- the
rolling hills of Canton, Patterson Park, & East
Baltimore in Leg 3, miles 13-19 (and will be gracefully
leaping over dead rats while doing so).
Stuart “Hey, this beats swimming”
Jeff: Our speedster, will bring it home for
the team and cross the finish line for us during Leg
4, miles 19-26. He will be zipping through Lake Montebello,
Charles Village, then near Bolton Hill, Mt. Vernon and
Eutaw Street until he sees the finish banner.
The start of the race is on the west side of Camden
Yards, 8AM. Below is the link to the marathon course
if you would like to come and support us:
http://www.thebaltimoremarathon.com/Assets/Baltimore+Marathon/pdf/07BaltMaraMap.pdf
Time estimates and locations:
-John passes to Monica at the MD Science Center on Key
Highway at approx. 10:30AM
-Monica passes to Stu at Clifton Park, near Harford
Road at approx. 11:45AM
-Stu relishes his “Chariots of Fire” moment
by crossing the finish line at approx. 12:35PM, in the
parking lot in front of Ravens Stadium, or “whatever
the hell corporate company now owns it” Stadium.
Best location to see a bit of everything: Inner Harbor.
You will see John pass by at Mile 6.5, then you can
walk to the MD Science Center to see the exchange point.
Afterwards, enjoy the Harbor, but make sure you get
back over to Ravens Stadium (about a 10 minute walk
from the Harbor; just take Conway street to Camden Yards,
and the finish line is about ¼ mile away from
there) to see Stuart cross the finish line!
And…you won’t be able to miss us b/c if
you saw our team shirts yesterday when we were showing
them off, you’ll be able to spot the BHG logo
from ½ a mile away! Oh, and our web address is
listed on the back of these shirts, so I’m apologizing
to IT right now if the site happens to crash Saturday
evening =9
If you have any questions, please let me know, and
I hope you can come to cheer us on!

Other than the running, this weekend’s major
sporting event will certainly be the Rollerderby championships
on Sunday! The Night Terrors and Speed Regime are both
5-1; who will win bragging rights?

BHG Outing: We Invade Renfest!
Interested? We are looking at Saturday, October 6th
to attend the MD Renaissance Festival because on that
day along with jousting and other fantastic performances…it
will be there Oktoberfest, so tons of German music,
dancing and bratwurst (giant turkey legs will still
be available, I’m sure). This event is open to
BHGers, their SO’s, and children. Because of the
amount of little ones joining us, the time for this
event is 1PM-5PM.
For
those of you not going to Renfest,
there is a charity Frisbee tournament this weekend to
benefit VietHope,
an organization dedicated to improving access to quality
education for impoverished rural schoolchildren in Vietnam.
Check out www.viethope.org
for more information. For those who play in the Sunday
games in Wyman Park, the event is being organized by
one of the players at that game. Come out and support
the crew!

With a successful High
Zero 2007 receding into the past the sonically curious
and adventurous need to travel farther to get their
fix this week. Or at least explore a new rut outside
the one worn between the
Red Room and An
Die Musik.
With
the debut of Marin Alsop’s reign at the Baltimore
Symphony last week out of the way it’s clear that
Charm City’s newest maestra will be leading the
BSO into the 21st century with an even treatment of
works both old and new. From the concert I heard last
Sunday it was clear that the BSO is already one of the
elite symphonic organizations in the country with a
crisp performance of John Adams’ Fearful Symmetries
and a performance of Gustav Mahler’s 5th Symphony
devoid of the usual plodding I’ve come to associate
with contemporary Mahler readings – no small feat
given the fact that the first movement is a dirge.

This week the John
Adams-centric focus on the 20th century takes a
dramatic turn as John Adams takes on the twin roles
of composer and guest conductor. There
aren’t many opportunities to hear Adams conducting
Adams and I highly recommend this one.
John Adams: My Father Knew Charles Ives
John Adams: The Wound Dresser (with guest vocalist
Sanford Sylvan)
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7
Thursday, October 4 - 8pm/Friday,
October 5 – 8pm/Saturday, October 6 – 11am

For
a dose of aboriginal jazz, Nomad
Stories is playing at An
Die Musik this weekend:
Kelly Shepherd: Saxes
Andrés Jimenez: Drums
Victor Andrés Cruz: Colombian
Percussion
Allan Palmer: Piano
Shane Allessio: Bass
Saturday, October 6 – 8:00pm & 9:30pm $20
An
Die Musik
409 N. Charles St., Baltimore MD
But
if you’re really hungry to hear one of the greatest
living pianists at the peak of her improvisational craft
you’ll make the trip up to Philadelphia to hear
one of my all time great obsessions: Marilyn
Crispell. Her set at An Die Musik a few months ago
was easily the concert of the year and having her longtime
collaborator and Andrew Cyrille playing drums on this
set makes it all the more of a must see.
Marilyn Crispell Trio
Marilyn Crispell: piano
Mark Helias: bass
Andrew Cyrille: drums
Also featuring the Lytton/Wooley Duo
Paul Lytton: percussion
Nate Wooley: trumpet

Maryland Race for the Cure - Sunday,
October 14th - Hunt Valley
Several friends from our other area gaming companies
have orgnaized a group named Gamers
Unite with the goal to gather all of us in the gaming
industry from Maryland, DC, and Virginia to come together
for a social event that also helps out the community.
The first event: you guessed it, the
2007 Susan G. Komen Maryland Race for the Cure
which is on Sunday, October 14, 2007,
which will be held this year in Hunt Valley. All events
start on Shawan Road just east of McCormic Rd, so it's
not very far from work.
The 5K run (3.1 miles) will begin at 8am; the 5k Walk
& 1 Mile Family Fun Walk will begin at 8:45AM. Run,
jog, walk or skip to help raise money for the cause.
Or, if you can't make it or are not up to it, you can
donate towards the team
donation goal. Family and friends of Big Huge are more
than welcome to join. Kids, too!
This year if you register online before October 1st
you can get your shirt and race bib mailed for free.
Also, before a certain date you can get light rail tickets
for free. This year's race will be up in Hunt Valley
so we could meet up at work before the race to avoid
parking issues and head over.
Also, I will be keeping you updated on future Gamers
Unite events; not all of them will be sports related,
but they will all involve one main goal: Giving back
to the community.
The registration fee is $30 per person, $10 for kids.
If you decide to join in late, no problem! You can mail
in your registration with a $5 mail in fee but will
have to pick up your t-shirt at a mall location.
This is all for a great cause so come run if you can
and if you can't come out then please consider donating
for the cure. Thanks so much!
