We are also checking on transportation so no one has
to drive anywhere but to the BHG parking lot.
A Saturday of Music
August 13th, 2007
Everything falls on Saturday this week. There's not
much to pull one out of the apartment on a Friday in
August. Looking ahead at the schedule it appears that
all hell breaks loose in in Baltimore in late-September/early-October
with the convergence of High
Zero and the start of the Baltimore
Symphony's first season with Marin
Alsop at the helm. Not to mention the wave of tours
funneling through An
Die Musik.
John Dierker Trio
John
Dierker: saxophones
Michael
Formanek: bass
Devin Gray: drums
John
Dierker was the highlight of Artscape's Exotic Hypnotic
and one of the brightest fixtures in the Baltimore free-improvisation
scene. This one appeals to my inner coffee-addicted
self...jazz & coffee... is there a better convergence
than that?
Saturday, August 18 - 7:00pm @ Koffee Therapy - $5
6 E. Franklin St.
Baltimore, MD
Hybrid
Groove Project
Another
highlight from the Exotic Hypnotic. Concert saxophonist
and forward-thinking blogger
Brian Sacawa brings his 2 turntables & a saxophone collaboration
with DJ Dubble8 into the Joe for another outing of this
evolving duo. This one appeals to my inner electronica
& pizza fiend.
Brian
Sacawa: saxophones
DJ
Dubble8 (Dr. Erik Spangler): turntables
Saturday, August 18 - 9:00pm @ Joe
Squared Pizza and Bar - $FREE

Baltimore, MD
Killick Erik Hinds Trio
Killick:
quarter-tone guitar
Samuel
Burt: laptop
Neil
Feather: invented instruments/contraptions
Visiting all the way from Athens, Georgia. This one
appeals to my inner microtonalist with his 24-tones-to-the-octave
guitar. (Why stop at 24? Why have frets at all? Octaves
are for wimps.) With Baltimore's Burt and Feather in
the mix this one won't be mediocre.
Saturday, August 18 - 8:30pm @ The
Red Room - $6
Normals Books and Records
425 E 31st St.
Baltimore, MD
Charm City Goodness This Week
August 6th, 2007
The
PAETEC Jazz Festival is taking place around the
Inner Harbor Thursday - Saturday. I suspect this one
is a classic case of using the word "jazz"
to acquire corporate and public funding for the event.
How else can one explain Earth
Wind & Fire and Little
Richard as headliners for a "jazz" festival?
Don't spend your $85 on the nostalgia trip. The best
shows are FREE!

Skerik's
Syncopated Taint Septet
Friday, 6:00pm @ Power Plant Live! Plaza FREE
A long-time fixture of the Seattle "punk jazz"
scene, Skerik has been the front man for a long line
of funky, crazy bands that include Sadhappy,
Critters
Buggin', Ponga
and Blowtallica. Syncopated Taint is the latest project
(that happens to include the awesome alto sax player
Hans
Teuber) and Baltimore may never be the same after
this show. Skerik was the real deal long before - and
after - "grunge" put Seattle on the map.
Shuffle
Demons
Friday, 8:00pm @ Power Plant Live! Plaza FREE
These guys were a big part of the Toronto jazz scene
back when I was living there. They bring a lot of humor
to their sound and have a knack for memorable drinking
songs. I still put on "It Will Only Take 10 Beers
My Dear (And I'll be yours 'till mornin')" and
"The Puker" to recreate those faded undergrad
memories.
Also, the Red
Room keeps the avant side of things going with another
show this Saturday:

Saturday, 8:30pm, Red Room @ Normals Books and Records
$6
Katt
Hernandez: violin Evan
Lipson: bass Dan Blacksburg:
trombone Michael
Evans: percussion John
Berndt: reeds Rose Hammer:
reeds
I caught Evan Lipson playing a gig with Jack Wright
earlier this year. He makes a pretty good racket on
bass. Baltimore has a vibrant experimental music scene
and this gig promises to be a warm-up for the High
Zero Festival coming next month.

Skerik isn't the only Seattle invasion to hit Baltimore
this week. King
Felix will be holding court down at the Yard of
Camden on Wednesday. I'll be sitting behind home plate
trying to gauge his legendary fastball as he strikes
out hapless Oriole hitters. Go Mariners! - Hurd
