Music to my ears!
June 25th, 2007
Marilyn
Crispell, piano and Louis
Moholo-Moholo, drums
An
Die Musik, Saturday, June 30, 8:00pm/9:30pm. $20
general/$18 students and members.
Marilyn Crispell is a prolific improviser with possibly
the best balance of technique, creativity and range
of any living pianist. She is also the second ever inductee
into the hallowed HurdAudio
Hall of Heroes, a dubious distinction extended to
only three people so far. (And one that requires a unanimous
vote by a committee consisting entirely of the voices
within my head.) I've driven across international borders
just to hear her play and I'm thrilled that she'll be
in Baltimore for this one-time performance with South
African drumming legend Louis Moholo-Moholo. They'll
be recording this show for a CD release later next year.

In the summertime, when the weather
is hot...
June 2nd, 2007

Today is First Thursdays in Mt. Vernon, with all kinds of drink specials and a free concert in front of the Washington Monument. This month's performer is Luke Brindley. Here's the City Paper writeup:
With a cleft in his chin and relationship songs "Never Alone," "Hold on to the Mystery," and "Mad Love" on his latest, self-titled album--not to mention his earlier work with his brother (a family man!)--Luke Brindley is reason enough to shave your legs for June's City Paper/WTMD 1st Thursdays Concert in the Park. He sounds a little like Van Morrison and Elliott Smith. But hey, no one would kick John Francis out of bed for eating crackers. Sharing the bill with Brindley, Francis (a cross between Conan O'Brien and a classically handsome man) sounds sort of rockabilly but without the preciousness or silliness--he means business. God, we hope he wears an embroidered Western shirt.

If you hit only one outdoor festival this year, make it Honfest, the annual Hampden paean to beehive hairdos and kitschy style.
Check out the photo galleries to find the Big Huger that ended up in the fashion show a couple years back!
If you need a warm-up before going to the Honfest this Saturday, join Monica and the Falls Road Running Store for the 1st Annual Hon Run 5K (a concept she had dreamt of, 2 years ago)! Info is below; emphasis is on the special award categories, and yes, Monica is one of the judges so you better arrive dressed to impress!
To get yourself in the mood, check out any of John Waters' classic films, including Hairspray, Pink Flamingos, and Pecker.
What is a hon, you may ask? You can generally pick them out from their accent.
Then in two weeks, get ready for the City Sand 2007 sand sculpture contest, sponsored by the Baltimore Architecture Foundation on Saturday June 23rd. I seem to recall that Big Huge has some awesome sand craftsmen, and so BHG would be happy to sponsor the $50 team fee.
Theme: Teams are encouraged to build a sand sculpture representing a fun summertime activity.
Time: Saturday, June 23, 2007 12-4pm at Harborplace (We may move the location from the traditional amphitheater location due to construction at Harborplace.)
Prizes: Two sets of prizes awarded to both Judge's choice and People's choice winners. The Grand prize is a 3-night stay for two Marriott Marco Island Resort Golf Club and Spa in San Marco, FL. Other prizes include gift certificates from Harborplace Merchants.
Rules: Each team will be provided with an area of sand approximately 10' x 10' x 1' in which to build. Only hand tools and water can be used for construction of the forms. No power tools, paint, additives, armatures, or framework allowed. Water will be provided on site.
