Free Events and Music!
May 21th, 2007

I don't think I can stand any more fun this week after two nights on the town out with THQ--and thanks to the many people who met up with us at Red Maple last night! However, there's at least one event you should think about checking out this week: the SoWeBo Arts Festival in Hollins Market on Sunday, May 27th. This is a great street party with music, food, and arts. I'd recommend two bands in particular: Ellen Cherry at 2:30, and Telesma at 7:00. Several of you have seen Ellen Cherry's brand of acoustic awesomeness at Mick O'Shea's and the Hon Bar. Telesma is billed as "psychedelic, electro-acoustic world dance music," whose live shows often include video projections, performance art, and belly dancing, as well as eclectic instruments such as the didgeridoo, bamboo mouth harp, and theremin.

The Shakespeare Theatre Company in DC is having a week of free performances. The show is a rendition of "Love's Labour's Lost" set in 1960's India. Great show in an aoutdoor theatre for free! Totally worth checking out.

FREE! There's a series of bicycle races this weekend in Patterson Park. In addition to the races, there'll be two Trials bike exhibitions, and two recreational rides that anyone can take part in (but the rides might involve fees). They'll also be selling beer and cheesy socks.

One Word: Fluid
May 18th, 2007

Looking for a zany project to throw yourself into this summer? Consider this year's Fluid Movement Water Ballet, "War and Fleas," aka "Tolstoy In The Dog Park!"

Every year, this performance art group transforms a bunch of complete amatuers into a well-oiled synchronized swimming extravaganza. The cast ranges from 50-70 people, some of who can't even swim! The people are a lot of fun, and the result is an inspired craziness with performances over the last two weekends in July.

If you aren't interested in performing or won't be around for the shows, they have other opportunities such as set construction, costume design, sound production, and general project co-ordination. If this sounds like something you want to get more information about before dipping your toes in the water, come to the Water Ballet Open House on Monday, 5/21, from 6-9 PM, at Load of Fun Studios, 120 North Avenue.

You may not have heard of it, but this week is American Craft Beer Week! To celebrate, Max's Taphouse in Fell's Point will be offering 60 American craft beers with special drink prices and events through Sunday, May 20th.

Joe Squared on North Avenue (right across from the Fluid Movement World Headquarters) is one of the coolest new hangouts in Baltimore. This Saturday, they'll be hosting a CD release party for a great jazz/funk outfit, Lafayette Gilchrist & the New Volcanoes. Show starts at 9:30 PM.

From Tim Ford:

In addition, a lot of people at BHG climb or are interested in climbing. If you've never checked out Earth Treks right down the street (the largest indoor gym on the East Coast), you should definitely take advantage of it.

But if you're looking for a good introduction to outdoor climbing (both bouldering and traditional/sport), and you have nothing planned for this weekend, grab your tent or tarp and head to the New River Gorge in West Virginia for the Fifth Annual New River Rendezvous. With a ton of special events (including free meals, free booze, free late-night parties, climbing competitions, bouldering pad Sumo wrestling, a silent auction), it should be a fun time for old-timers and newbies alike. Best of all, there's no registration. Just show up!

Last but certainly not least...one of Baltimore's defining quirky events returns this year in the form of the Kinetic Sculpture Race!

The goal is to create a vehicle, totally human-powered, that can travel on land AND on the water. This event is sponsored by the American Visionary Art Museum. They are still looking for volunteers if you want to get up close to the action.

From the website:
"Pilots (Kinetinauts) compete for the most coveted MEDIOCRE AWARD (finishes right in the middle) and the highly prized NEXT-TO-THE-LAST AWARD (finishes, well, next to last) and serious prizes including ART and ENGINEERING."
