Arr Matey!
April 25th, 2007

The most fun thing on my radar this week is surely "Privateer Day," happening in Fell's Point this Saturday. Dress up like a pirate, drink a lot of grog, and say "ARRRR" constantly! The fun for the whole family starts at 11 AM, with period music, ship building & sailing for kids, Pirate Storytelling, cannon demonstrations, and a Pirate Invasion at 4:30 PM.

Then things get more, er, pirate-y with the Pyrate Invasion that starts at 6 PM and goes into the night with special events and a pub crawl at the local drinking holes. I'm planning to stumble around for awhile in the 10 PM timeframe; let me know if you are in the area and perhaps we can join forces!

In between your Pirate pillaging, check out Glitterama II, hosted by Fluid Movement at the Load of Fun studios. The last Glitterama was chockablock full of very funny performances from those crazy performance arteests. As a bonus, Marla is working the door. A double bonus is that you can show up in your pirate costume and feel completely at home...

If you can spare the time from sewing your pirate costume on Wednesday, the Mobtown Shank Book Club will be discussing the first installment of the best comic book EVAH, with Sandman issues 1-8 (collected as the "Preludes & Noctures" graphic novel). Mark Nelson and I are headed down after work--let us know if you want to join in the fun! 7 PM at Frazier's on the Avenue in Hampden.

Courtesy of Devin Hurd comes another concert of avant-garde goodness for Wednesday: Up and coming local saxophonist (and competitive cyclist) Brian Sacawa has his CD release party for "American Voices" at An Die Musik this Wednesday, April 25 at 8:00pm/$12

He will be joined by Michael Djupstrom on piano and DJ Dubble8 on turntables. Check him out. This guy is cool.

Sunday marks the Charm City Roller Girls season opener at Putty Hill Skateland. If you haven't seen this orgy of violence on wheels, you owe it to yourself to take in the spectacle. Given the injury rate at the bouts I've attended, I expect that soon the sport will have maimed everyone in the Baltimore region willing to give it a try. Go Night Terrors!

The Maryland Film Festival is held every year in the first week of May, and is one of the highlights of springtime in Baltimore. Check out the schedule and plan to attend at least some of the screenings! You are likely to have the most fun as a volunteer, with free movie vouchers, tickets to the Closing Night Party, and celebrity elbow-rubbings as your reward. To volunteer for the festival (May 3-6th), e-mail volunteer@mdfilmfest.com.

From Egypt to Japan and Beyond
April 18th, 2007

One of the most fun recurring events during the week is belly dance night on Wednesdays at the Red Maple, in Mt. Vernon. This Wednesday (4/18), the venue will host a whole troupe of performers known as Egyptian Sun. This performance is also a group fundraiser - if you rsvp (and arrive before 11pm), the door is reduced from $10 to $5, the whole $5 goes to Egyptian Sun, and you get comped a drink with the cover. RSVP to egyptiansun@shanta.com. They'll be dancing from 10pm - 12ish.

Also on Wednesday, Centerstage is hosting a celebration of Japanese culture from 7-11 PM.

From the website:
"CENTERSTAGE transforms into Puchi Nippon, or 'Little Japan,' with a building-wide celebration of Japanese culture, arts, & style. Grab your cultural passport and immerse yourself in sushi, sake, koto, ikebana, hapmudo, geisha dance, samurai swordsmanship, tea ceremonies, fashion shows, music, art, culture, and food."

The City Paper is sponsoring its annual Brew Fest in Fell's Point this Saturday from 1-5 PM. Choose from 40 beers, listen to music, or simply enjoy the Amsterdam-esque ability to walk the street with a cold brew in hand. Proceeds benefit the Fells Point Preservation Society.

Big Huge Games will be attending the Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox baseball game this next Thursday, April 26th at 7:05 p.m. Come on out and root for the Orioles with us!

Not enough hifalutin culture in these here Baltimore Happenings posts? Check out the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival! They are wrapping up their 2006/2007 season with performances of All's Well That Ends Well, through April 22nd.

Play My Melody!

They're showing DARKON at the Senator Tomorrow, Saturday April 14th at 2:30. I saw this at the Maryland Film Festival a while back and found it hilarious and really entertaining. Its a documentary about live-action RPG'ers and was filmed in here Maryland, so maybe there will be a bunch of dudes there in armor like there were at the film festival. i'm going to go.

Tonight, April 11th, the Sidebar Tavern is hosting "DS NIGHT!"

Tim Ford says:
"Bring your Nintendo DS and enjoy a night of gameplay against opponents the likes of which you have never faced!

Drink Specials All Night! Doors Open @ 9pm!

A few of us are going. Let me know if you'd like to join us, or just show up. It's on the corner of Guilford and Lexington. It's pretty nondescript, but you'll see an awning with the word 'Sidebar' on it."

On Thursday, April 12th, the Cockeysville Library is hosting the "Indie Comics A-Go-Go" at 7:00 PM. From the website:

Indie Comics A-Go-Go! - Emily Flake, Brian Ralph and Mark Burrier
Hear how three talented cartoonists got started through self-publishing and the small press and then see what they are working on now!

Devin Hurd says:
"One of my all-time free jazz heroes will be playing at the Red Room this Friday: Peter Brotzmann.

Peter Brotzmann: reeds
with
Marino Pliakas: bass
Michael Wertmuller: drums

Friday, April 13th, 8:00pm & 9:30pm, $12 per set.
at The Red Room
Normals Books and Records
425 E. 31st Street.
Baltimore

Peter Brotzmann is a founding member of the European Free Jazz movement of the 1960s and his unorthodox, aggressive approach to the saxophone is often referred to as 'sonic terror.'

'Pliakas and Wertmuller were equally assertive at filling every last bit of space in the thick canvas of sound and matched Brötzmann’s fire with accompaniment worthy of an Ozzfest booking.' -JazzTimes"

If "sonic terror" doesn't entice you to check out this awesome venue, I don't know what will...see Devin for more info or to carpool to the show!

And as mentioned last week:

The Baltimore Jewish Film Festival is running right now and showing two films this weekend at the Gordon Center for the Performing Arts.

I'm especially interested in the Rape of Europa, which is playing again next weekend at the Walter's.

The Rape of Europa tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe’s art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War.

In a journey through seven countries, the film takes the audience into the violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. For twelve long years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. But young art professionals as well as ordinary heroes, from truck drivers to department store clerks, fought back with an extraordinary effort to safeguard, rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden and stolen treasures.

Yeah, it's been awhile since the last dance fest I went to at Ottobar and this sounds like the perfect opportunity! Hope to see you guys there! Please feel free to send this on to other dancin fools!

Spring Has Sprung!
April 02nd, 2007

Spring has sprung, and with it comes a plethora of sporting opportunities! Join Big Huge e-mail aliases "soccer" or "b-ball" for more info on some of the following activities:

First up, Big Huge is sponsoring a co-ed indoor soccer team. Zack Smith is captaining the squad, and his new hairstyle is a symbol of his dedication. Games will be played on Tuesday or Fridays, time TBD but no earlier than 7 PM. I think games begin next week, so let Zack know if you are interested in playing!

Now that it's warm out, we're starting to play basketball again on Tuesdays and Thursdays after work. Current venue is Ridgely Middle School, although we may try different courts.

Finally, Baltimore has a very large ultimate frisbee community, with a range of competition to fit every level of skill. The main group I play with meets on Wednesday nights at 7:45 PM and Saturday afternoons at 2:45 PM at 36th & Falls Road in Hampden. The field is lighted, so we play all year round in pretty much any kind of weather conditions. Most people repair to PJs pub for food and drinks after playing a game.

For relatively competitive league play, check out the Central Maryland Ultimate website:
http://www.md-ultimate.org/

They are listing a spring drop-in league running through May, which meets Mondays 8-11. There will be a more organized summer league starting after that. For more pickup options, check out:

http://www.md-ultimate.org/pickup.htm

For those who feel their frisbee skills are not up to any competitive standard whatsoever, there's a group that plays in Patterson Park on Sundays at 5 PM. The core of the group is from the JHU School of Public Health, and they don't bother with niceties like keeping score or stall counts. Let me know if you are interested and I'll provide more details.

In non-sports-related activities, don't forget the Guitar Hero competition benefitting Moveable Feast on Friday. From last week's post:

Guitar Hero Competition!

Friday, April 6, 2007
7PM-10PM
Atomic POP
3620 Falls Road ( near corner of Falls and 36th Street)

Think you have chops (of either the guitar-playing or video-gaming variety)? Think they're good enough to win the grand prize? Show us what you're made of! $1 per try, donated to Moveable Feast, with a prize for the highest score.
Free refreshments!! Drinks! And snacks! But don't forget to tip your server: All tips go to Moveable Feast as well.

Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Ballet is on this Friday at the Lyric, and "All's well that ends well" has just started showing.

And finally, be sure to save the date for the Creative Alliance Marquee Ball 2007 on Saturday, April 14th. If you haven't yet seen the Allmighty Senators, one of Baltimore's great live bands, this is the perfect venue:
