Looking into Art and
Science...
March 26th, 2007
It's an early edition this week because one of the
best events known to man (or woman) is going on today
and tomorrow, and the word must go forth! Cranbrook
Liquors in Cockeysville is having its biannual "Dollar
Days" sale, where all alcohol is sold at $1 above
cost. This translates into an average savings of 30%,
and is a great excuse to stock up on single-malts for
Dave's Christmas present, high-end tequilla for Cinco
de Mayo, or cases of good wine at a fantastic price.
They'll have several tables for tasting before you buy
as well. Be warned: they don't take credit cards (although
bank cards are OK) and you might be in line for a half
hour once you've made your selection.

Got
some kiddos with spring fever? Try a trip to the "Grossology"
exhibit at the Maryland Science Center at the Inner
Harbor. They can learn about seasonal allergies in the
"Snot" exhibit, or stop by the "Vomit
Center" to learn the many reasons humans regurgitate.
As the Center website proclaims: "This larger-than-life
biology lesson is full of things kids love - gross smells,
burps, crusty stuff and slime!"
This
weekend, the Transmodern
Festival brings "four days of provoactive works
by cultural experimenters from Baltimore & the world"
to the Load of Fun studio gallery in the newly-named
"Station Arts North" district. The event is
sponsored by MICA, the Creative Alliance, and Goucher
College. Tonight, internationally-renowned performance
artist Nao Bustamante, Brooklyn-based artist/dancer
Baraka de Soleil w/ underground artist network D Underbelly,
Baltimore theater from Temple Crocker, and the improvised
poetry and music of Ijeoma and Oluyemi Thomas. Plus
the lady wrestlers of Slapdown w/ band The Object Lesson!

The Weekend We're All Irish!
March 15th, 2007
Of
course the big event this week is Saint Patrick's
Day! If you want something slightly more raucous
than Shepherd's Pie specials at the Stil, check out
a couple of these local Irish bars:
Cat's
Eye Pub in Fell's Point--my personal fave
for Irish music and a slighly crazy crowd
J
Patrick's Irish Pub in Locust Point (the
next neighborhood over from Federal Hill)--this is as
"authentic" an Irish pub as you'll get this
side of County Cork. Don't miss the fish & chips!
For more ideas on how to celebrate, check out:

Did you miss Spamalot on Broadway?
Now's your big chance--it's playing at the Hippodrome
Theater through March 18th.
Cell Phone: The Cell Phone Explored
Ever wonder what medium the hip new artists are working
in? Apparently, cell phones are all the rage! Join students
from MICA as they explore the possibilites of this new
space:

The Circus is in Town!
Got kids who like animals, but are too young to feel
sympathy for the poor elephants? Ringling Bros. etc.
is at the Baltimore
Arena through March 18th.
New Hotspot Alert!
XS
Cafe in Mt. Vernon now has live DJs 7 nights
a week, spinning Deep House and NuJazz for your listening
pleasure. I've not been yet, but I've heard a lot about
it.
Food, Vampires and More!
March 6th, 2007
Thursday, March 8th is the next party
celebrating
Baltimore City Paper's 30th year anniversary! The
"Cosmic Cocktail Party" coincides with the
release of the Eat Dining Guide, and will be held at
The Belvedere from 7-10 PM.

When that's over, head home for this week's episode
of
Ace of Cakes on the Food Network at 10:30 PM, a
reality show that serializes the antics of Charm City
Cakes, located in Remington. This week's show centers
on Chef Duff's awe-inspiring performance at Glitterama,
a Fluid Movement show where you are likely to see our
very own Marla Kanefsky in full costumed regalia, manning
the door.
On Tuesday, March 13th, Ram's
Head Live! will be hosting a reunited Public
Enemy, including recent ubiquitous reality
show personality Flavor Flav.
From Atomic Books on Wednesday, March 14th:
For
those who still pine for the days of Joss Whedon's "Buffy
The Vampire Slayer," Season 8 of Buffy The Vampire
Slayer starts on this day, as a
comic book. This is a reading party. Everyone will
get together to read the comic, there will be drink
specials on the The Slayer, and maybe they'll show some
old episodes.
